Outside the Kiti-shinigawa station, on the south side of Tokyo, there is a sign telling your where you are. And that you are not alone. Now I grew up watching the Godzilla movies. I might not remember the finer plot points, heck, I don't even remember the major plot points or the names of his worthy adversaries. But there are a few things I do remember: there was a big lizard that breathed fire, he seemed to favor Tokyo, and the workers (for lack of a better term) seemed to wear slightly petite hardhats. I only mention the hardhats because of my surprise last year when arriving at Tokyo's Narita airport I looked out the plane window to see everybody still wearing those slightly smaller helmets -- and I thought it was only in the movies. But it was the sign the really intrigued me. Was this a mini-memorial? Or did he actually take up residence nearby and simply commute to work? I thought Godzilla just lurked in the subconscious of those who watched too many horror movies as kids. Apparently he is alive and well, at least in spirit, somewhere in Tokyo. What about Mothra? What about that flying turtle guy with the red-lighted gizmos that shoots the flames and all that? What about those tiny girls in the cage that sing a siren song to Mothra? I am hearing a double-feature rental weekend; I'll get the popcorn! wk
