I wanted to make a sign out of Legos for Eli. The challenge in making it visually interesting was the lack of curves or even angles in the letters. I decided to use the simplest shapes for the letters I could that would still allow the letters to appear balanced with regard to one another. (The E fits in a 4x7 grid, the l in a 3x7 grid, and the i in a 1x5 grid.) Each grid square of this basic form was replaced with a 3x3 arrangement of Legos. The squares not part of a letter became white Legos with a gray center. For the letters, each grid square became a square of red Legos with a blue center. Then I decided that adjacent letter squares should have their blue centers connected. And there you have it. (See the big picture.)
